Teach Kids Early On About Economics

Parents always protect their children for as long as they can, and sometimes protecting children can mean that they are not exposed to the elements of everyday life that an adult takes for granted. Think about the first time you had to start a checking account, write a check, register a vehicle, set up utilities for your residence, or buy a home. If your parents never took the time to show you how all of that works then it can be an intimidating and scary situation.

When kids are in school they learn a lot from teachers and from their friends. From their teachers they learn discipline and the value of paying attention to the world around them, and from their friends they learn how to develop the social skills necessary to interact with people on a daily basis. But kids need to learn about finances as soon as they are able to understand them, because they grow up fast and the longer you put it off the better the chances are that your 18 year old child will head out into the world unprepared to take care of the basics of living in our society.

Take the time to show your kids how to fill out an application for credit, or how to correctly write a check, or even how to register a car with the department of motor vehicles. Your kids see you take care of these things while they are growing up and their curiosity is always piqued. They have questions, so show them the processes you go through to keep your life organized and be prepared to answer their questions. One of the biggest tasks when you have kids is to prepare them for life on their own, and the first step to doing that is showing them how to set up their adult lives within the structure of our economic society.

Kids want to learn, and the older kids get the more they want to be like their parents. They see you write a check or use a credit card, and they develop a curiosity as to how it is done and what you need to do to maintain it. Show them the inner workings of the economics of being an adult, and when they set out on their own you can feel confident that they will be able to take care of themselves and get the things they need to be part of our society.
